Making and Curating

Over the years I have developed a close relationship with clay; it’s behaviour and properties have gradually seduced me, intellectually, kinetically and sensorially. Clay has taught me to expand and challenge myself, to take risks and engage with my failures, discovering together possibilities and limitations. Clay coupled with my own disabilities have inspired me to produce objects that explore function and dysfunction, disability and difference, use, disuse and re-use, recycling and reinvention. Pieces are inspired by external and internal landscapes and the colour, imagery, surfaces and shapes are a product of this. I create tactile and possibly desirable objects using subverted traditional making techniques. I slip-cast, alter and slab-build my ceramic sculptures and vessels producing limited lots and one-off pieces.

I have worked in Mental Health and Learning Disabilities for 17 years and my interest in function extends to how humans function in a variegated world, how we interact with our environment using our hands and tactility and how we respond, and what we produce when there is a dissonance between our world experience and our ability to function in it.
